Fortress of Suomenlinna, Helsinki

4.5
#1 of 1,395 in Things to do in Finland
Visit World Heritage Site Fortress of Suomenlinna to see a sea fortress built on a collection of six islands. This ruggedly beautiful spot is a favorite among both locals and tourists. The fortress was built in 1748 and inhabited by Swedes and Russians until 1918, when it became a part of independent Finland. View the impressive fortified structure, constructed by the Swedish crown to withstand attacks from 18th-century Russia (who eventually overtook the islands in 1808). Nowadays the site supports a town with civilian inhabitants and draws visitors from the mainland of Finland. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Helsinki holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Fortress of Suomenlinna and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The island has a lot of interesting and exciting Fort passages, museums, old cannons and the submarine Vesikko. A flashlight is a good book.

  • The ferry to Suomenlinna was included in our travel pass. In winter, this place doesnt offer much. However, the entire trail, including the man-made cave-like structures in the second half of the isla...  more »

  • We absolutely enjoyed this island! We went at the end of October, and it was a very drizzly and cold day out, but enjoyable nonetheless. We visited the submarine and the military museum, and I would've loved to explore the island more, but in better weather! There's a lot to choose from as far as museums go! I would recommend getting there a little early for the ferry, they're a good size but the queue seems to form instantly.
  • Suomenlinna is one of the best destination to spend a sunny day in summer. It’s accessible with public transport ticket by ferry. Historically important island is naturally beautiful and also has museums. We visit at least once in every summer.
  • This island is a must see in the winter. Taking the ferry across the frozen water is the best part. Then walking the frozen tunnels of the fort is a close second. Go there hungry and thirsty because there are cafes all over and a good restaurant close to the ferry station. Dress warm in the winter and bring your camera because it’s otherworldly.
  • The public transport ferry to Suomenlinna is a great way to experience the frozen ocean around Helsinki in the winter. The old (still in use) terminal building is worth checking out as well.
  • Will recommend going there if you are in helskini. We took a ferry (that was also included in our 5 days transport pass) and was there in 10-15minutes. Took us 2hours to explore the beautiful snow covered landscape and fortress and then we hopped back onto the ferry. Very different from the rest of the attractions in the city center. Worth going to unwind, look at the vast expanse of snow, old architecture, snow fight.
