Korkeasaari Zoo, Helsinki

#1 of 34 in Outdoors in Helsinki
Since it was established in 1889, Korkeasaari Zoo has attracted tourists and animal lovers for more than a century. The zoo's rocky island location attracts as much awe as the animals here; in fact, the island was a national park and used for fishing in 1569 until the establishment of the zoo in the 19th century. Discover this quiet spot removed from the city center where you can view over 150 animal species and 1,000 types of plants. Walk through the site's popular cat valley and get to know the exotic creatures at one of Europe's oldest zoos. Put Korkeasaari Zoo into our Helsinki trip planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Nice place, the animals here are beloved, I recommend the visit in spring when the bear awakes from hibernation and "tropical" birds are released into the Aviary

  • Over the past six months has been here 2 times, in September and January. Since childhood did not like zoos and circuses of the terrible attitude to animals and smell. The first time I liked it here. Pets groomed, fattened. Pure. The Zoo is located on the island, people come here for the whole day. In addition to budget enough cafes have tables where you can FRY sausages brought with them. The coal, skewers, ignition-all of that is here and it's free! Another plus is that there is no razvodilovok for parents, such as machines with sweet cotton, luminous horns, etc. just rest! Me as citified was very comfortable. Come with pleasure again!

  • The zoo is more of a park. The children enjoy coming here very much, but do not expect to see very many animals. The modern enclosures alow many of the animals to hide from view, but you always have f...  more »
  • I was very disappointed in my visit there. Went there in March and despite them saying on the website that most of the animals would be outside in winter as well this was not the case. We maybe got to see about half the animals. On top of that the outlook tower from which you can see Helsinki was not accessible because there was no winter service. Also the Zoo shop was closed. This would have all been still enjoyable if it was stated beforehand and if there was maybe a reduced price in the winter season. Instead they still made me pay the full adult price because I forgot my student id. The whole experience might be different in the summer though. It still is quite a small zoo compared to others I've visited. It's nicely located on an island however, and the direct bus from the main train station is very convenient.
  • Full of wildlife, with pleasant surprises of peacocks and families of goose running around eager to interact with you!
  • Nice
  • Great Observation Tower scenery!
  • Spend an unforgettable day at the Zoo! In the Zoo you can enjoy natural diversity: it has 150 animal species and almost 1000 species of plants. Helsinki Zoo is one of the few zoos that are located on the island. Here it is worth to come to enjoy the beauty of nature, look at animals and immerse yourself in the story. The Zoo was founded in 1889 and is one of the oldest zoos in the world. Helsinki Zoo is also involved in the protection of the natural habitats of different species of animals Wednesday. Helsinki Zoo's mission is to work for the maintenance of biodiversity. Zoo seemed to me interesting enough, by the way, all year round. In the summer before the Zoo can be reached by ferry, leaving from the main market square. In other seasons to the Zoo by bus No. 16 through the island of Mustikamaa. Zoo combined with Botanical Garden, on whose territory grow thousands of species of flowers, trees and shrubs. In Helsinki Zoo animals that live in a natural Wednesday live in various parts of the world, from the Arctic tundra to the tropical rainforest. At the Zoo are pavilions Africa and Amazonia with monkeys and colorful parrots. There is a valley of the big cats, enclosures with ungulates, brown bears and seals. The area of the Zoo is more than 22 hectares. At the beginning of 2007, his collection numbered about 200 animal species (of which 20 species of rare and endangered) and the total number of more than 2 000 individuals and over 1 thousand species of plants. The Zoo is one of the most popular attractions of the Finnish capital. In the summer from Helsinki to the Zoo regularly ferry. Winter is good ...
