Trip Planner:   Finland  /  Uusimaa  /  Helsinki  /  Senate Square

Senate Square, Helsinki

The Helsinki Cathedral, Government Palace, National Library of Finland, and main University of Helsinki building surround Senate Square and make up a collective vision of neoclassical design. This historical square boasts the architectural influence of Carl Ludvig Engel and is home to the oldest building in the city center, Sederholm House, built in 1757. Stroll the square to view these stately structures, stopping to take a seat on the cathedral's stairs and to examine the statue of Alexander II, a monument of Russian expansionism in Finland. The square hosts many events, including concerts and art exhibits. See Senate Square and all Helsinki has to offer by arranging your trip with our Helsinki travel route builder tool .

  • Beautiful place that is so well maintained and in pristine condition after so many years. The best part is that it is well lit even at night so you can go for a walk around the city and enjoy such sights and beautiful views. There are plenty of cafes and other places to eat and drink in the vicinity for everyone to be able to enjoy their time.
  • Wonderful and beautiful place, right in the heart of Helsinki. The square around with beautiful historical building where you can find small shops and restaurants. Also the Helsinki Cathedral and statue of Alexander II. Today, the Senate Square is one of the main tourist attraction of Helsinki. Various art happening has been set up on the Senate Square.
  • Area is really nice looking and one of the places you have to see when you visit Helsinki. Good restaurants in close proximity. The restaurants can be pretty expensive tho so be prepared!
  • One of Helsinki's most popular tourist destinations. The market hosts the Santa Market, which offers plenty of shopping and eating options. The Square itself is surrounded with traditional architecture and modern buildings, making it extremely scenic and photogenic.
  • I was on a day trip on the ferry to Helsinki from Tallinn. Weather was a bit cold and damp so not the best day for siteseeing, but this was one of the more notably and impressive buildings that I came across. Transport to and from the ferry terminal/ city centre was v.good. Worth a visit possibly in the summer !!
