Senate Square, Helsinki

4.3
The Helsinki Cathedral, Government Palace, National Library of Finland, and main University of Helsinki building surround Senate Square and make up a collective vision of neoclassical design. This historical square boasts the architectural influence of Carl Ludvig Engel and is home to the oldest building in the city center, Sederholm House, built in 1757. Stroll the square to view these stately structures, stopping to take a seat on the cathedral's stairs and to examine the statue of Alexander II, a monument of Russian expansionism in Finland. The square hosts many events, including concerts and art exhibits. See Senate Square and all Helsinki has to offer by arranging your trip with our Helsinki travel route builder tool .

  • Helsinki's attraction. Good place to bask in the sun in summer and watch people. Nice views for pictures. Close to main attractions. The big white church is beautiful
  • Crowdy and touristic. Nothing even remotely resembling a Finnish market square. But something interesting often attached to the piers. Anyway worth visiting.
  • One of the central places in Helsinki or maybe it is the most central place in the Finnish capital city Helsinki. All around the Senate Square are located the "head quqrters" of all the powers in the country. The Square is dominated by the White Church which symbolizes the dominant Lutherian religion in the country. To the south part of the Square is located the Finnish Government's Palace, the headquarter of the political power. To the west lays the City Hall, the centre of the local municipal power and the domicile of Helsinki's own city government an council. Opposite to the government palace on the north part of the Square is the Helsinki University, source of the scientific power. And in the middle of the Square figures the statue of the emperor Alexander II to remember us that Finland was once under the Russian Empire before it gained its independence 100 years ago in 1917.
  • Perfect time to spend a small time with friends. It's always worth visiting.
  • So beautiful and worth while. Just amazing architecture of the churches/cathedrals and the beauty of thw buildings around is so eye opening.
