The Raseborg Castle, is a medieval castle in Raseborg, Finland. It has been suggested that the castle was founded by Hermann of Dorpat, the successor of Albert of Riga, and Livonian Brothers of the Sword after Livonian Crusade. They would have named the castle Ratzeburg after Bishopric of Ratzeburg. The castle is also suggested to be founded by Bo Jonsson Grip and it is thought that the castle's first phase was completed sometime between 1373 and 1378.The first written data about the castle is from 1378. Its main purpose was to protect Sweden's interests in southern Finland against the Hanseatic city of Tallinn. The castle was originally built on a small island in the north end of a sea bay. The historians think that the castle was built in 3 different stages over time from the 14th to the 16th century. The layout of the castle resembles a capital 'D', with a round, thick-walled donjon on one corner and the straight part of the D forming the keep, and an inner bailey in center. The castle has had outer walls forming two outer baileys. The outer wall has had one square tower and a barbican.

  • One of the reasons why initially we went to Raseborg! with a friend, was going to start with this. We went in for a couple of hours before the closure of the site, so there is not much about the other people there. Through the ruins must not pass through to herself and to look at the places in peace. The ruins are some of the fun places with a new view of the courtyard or get out. We stayed with a friend for about one and a half hours in the ruins of the valokuvaten. The place would be suitable for the small-scale photoshoottiin.

  • Raseborg Castle, Museum and the love path are a good day. The Government has restored order in the forest region and Slotstugassa good.

  • Beautiful and relaxing walk with the old castle built on top of a rock, scattered country houses, a quiet river and a flock of sheeps  more »

  • Nice partly restored castle. It is open all the time and no entry fee or personell there. You are free to explore. Interesting history also.
  • Unique castle with a great view from the top. Also reachable by boat.
  • It's nice to explore the castle ruins, but unless you go on certain days (check their website beforehand), there is no one to give any information about the castle. Some info signs on the way there, but nothing once you're inside.
  • Wonderful castle. Great Finnish Medieval heritage
  • Loved walking around the outside of the castle ruins, even though it was closed on that particular day and I couldn't go inside. Someplace I would like to visit again.
