Olavinlinna Castle, Savonlinna

Built on an island connecting two lakes, Olavinlinna Castle stands as the northernmost stone fortress from the Middle Ages still intact. Founded in 1475 by Knight Erik Axelsson Tott on behalf of the Swedish Crown, it was constructed to protect the Savo region from Russian forces. Explore the stone castle, take in scenic views of the lakes, and visit the castle museum and Orthodox museum to learn more about the history of the structure and region. View artifacts collected from the fortress, religious icons, and items from Finland and Russia. The Savonlinna Opera Festival has been held here since 1912. • Very nice Castle from the outside with a lot of charm. On the other hand do not visit the inside, we found worse than the french home. Entrance €10 per person, and forced to wait for the guide to visit the castle in full. Castle without furniture no error tables low prices to equip a room rental of meal and other parts that you can visit are in work or badly restored. We wanted to follow the visit which had begun with a group of German, the guide made us leave telling us to wait for the group after. The only downside we understand English and German but the group after the tour was only in British... The cashier gave us no solution, she was busy reading her diary

  • First got into the castle in winter. In spring and summer, and autumn-better to visit. Free entrance on the first floor "uzhalsja" five years ago you could wander around the courtyard and garden. But within the walls of the castle made a classy free toilet))) Russian tours more than once a day, and much more. Need clarifying.

  • We visited the fortress already on the way out of town, it was Sunday, and the cashier didn't work. We inspected the public part of the fortress (courtyard, a Knight, a viewing floor). Beautiful, monumental building! Views of the waterscape, shimmering in the Sun, absolutely stunning, especially through the inspection Windows in the wall. Absolutely wonderful opportunity to touch history! (Incidentally, the fortress has a modern restroom, think, for families with young children this is important!)

  • Olavinlinna is the best Castle in The Finland. It's very glorious and worth to visit. Don't forget to try "Lörtsy" in Savonlinna. 🏰
  • Amazing place, beautiful castle. Hosts cool opera festival.
  • Astonishing castle! You should take the tour and save some. Time to sit outside.
  • Awesome place to visit. The guided tour is only in Finnish and Russian (if there are enough), so no good for English speaking people but the tour is the only way to see the castle. An english guide would have got 5 stars.
  • Impressive historic site, what's not to like?
