Korkeasaari Zoo, Helsinki

3.8
#1 of 13 in Zoos & Aquariums in Finland
Since it was established in 1889, Korkeasaari Zoo has attracted tourists and animal lovers for more than a century. The zoo's rocky island location attracts as much awe as the animals here; in fact, the island was a national park and used for fishing in 1569 until the establishment of the zoo in the 19th century. Discover this quiet spot removed from the city center where you can view over 150 animal species and 1,000 types of plants. Walk through the site's popular cat valley and get to know the exotic creatures at one of Europe's oldest zoos. Put Korkeasaari Zoo into our Helsinki trip planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Walking around the island is good exercise and you can see a lot of cute animals, accompanied by an educational description which is very informative. The lion’s roar is very loud, there are tigers an...  more »
  • Visited the Zoo on weekends. Arrived without problems, the car Navigator left for free, before braking. To the Zoo had to walk about 1 km through the Park Zoo is located on the island, where all the territory ceded under the menagerie. before entering bought tickets for adults 12 euros for children from 6 years 4-17 euros has been working with Zoo 6:00 pm to 10. all very neat and organized, no dirt and stench. Animals live in very spacious enclosures, almost like in nature. If the animals are not predators and are not dangerous to others, the maximum low and open enclosures, so children may very well consider them very surprised walking freely on the territory of peacocks on the territory there is a big sandbox for children, there is also a café where you can enjoy snack. Very impressed the Amur tiger.

  • The Zoo is located on the island, which can be reached by bus 16 (directly from the railway station). It occupies a huge territory, valery big animals well fed, but it's a shame that many tank empty. Little animals, when compared to other zoos. Cafes and stalls closed all but one (a day off). Of course those animals, that there is a very cute, but your price is not justified.

  • The zoo is on an island. Took the boat from the market to the zoo (7 euros, return). You purchase zoo tickets once you arrive at the zoo. The zoo is well layed out and an easy walk. There are a couple of restaurants along the way. There appeared to be an emphasis on big cats - every type of big cat imaginable. Also enjoyed the reindeer! It was a pleasant way to spend 2-3 hours.
  • It was amazing adventure - the best zoo in the World! If you have time, my advice is to visit it. I was really charmed about such various species of animals and their living condition. This zoo grow up my love for Finland.
  • Helsinki zoo is on an island. You're able to get here via their ferry from Market Square, or bus to the main entrance bridge. It's fairly straightforward, but there is a small charge for either. The highlights of the zoo are the big cats. They have leopards, tigers, Asiatic lions, lynx, and snow leopards. There are also brown bears. All of the animals had large spacious well kept enclosures. The signage was very good and easy to understand. There's a good selection of animals, several cafés and a picnic area. The gift shop was poor, almost exclusively selling soft toys. Expect to spend between half a day and a day here.
  • Excellent view to the coast. If you visit the beach, please leave clean the place where you pic-nic or grill.
  • I was very disappointed in my visit there. Went there in March and despite them saying on the website that most of the animals would be outside in winter as well this was not the case. We maybe got to see about half the animals. On top of that the outlook tower from which you can see Helsinki was not accessible because there was no winter service. Also the Zoo shop was closed. This would have all been still enjoyable if it was stated beforehand and if there was maybe a reduced price in the winter season. Instead they still made me pay the full adult price because I forgot my student id. The whole experience might be different in the summer though. It still is quite a small zoo compared to others I've visited. It's nicely located on an island however, and the direct bus from the main train station is very convenient.
