Senate Square and its surroundings make up the oldest part of central Helsinki. Landmarks and famous buildings surrounding the square are the Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, main building of the University of Helsinki, and Sederholm House, the oldest building of central Helsinki dating from 1757.
The Palace of the Council of State (or Government Palace) was completed on the eastern side of the Senate Square in 1822. It served as the seat of the Senate of Finland until it was replaced by the Council of State in 1918, and now houses the offices of the Prime minister of Finland and the cabinet. The main University building, on the opposite side of the Senate Square, was constructed in 1832.
The Helsinki Cathedral on the northern edge of the Senate Square was Engel's lengthiest architectural project. He was working on it from 1818 until his death in 1840. The Helsinki Cathedral — then called the Church of St. Nicholas — dominates the Senate Square, and was finalized twelve years afters Engel's death, in 1852.

I went in to have a look for something small to take home as a souvenir of Finland but when I saw the selection I decided to have a closer look for something I could use for more than just a memory... more »

A must visit in Helsinki to get that photo! If you climb up the steps of the senate building, to will be rewarded with a view of the city and the sea. Nice square with not too many people when we were there.

A must go for aesthetic beauty lover. one of the best monumental architectures. This place has its very own taste type and flavour. This Senate square is well decorated. Services persons are very well mannered. And the place is well ventilated. Washroom is available and clean. Recommended. I went there before Christmas. It was calm and quiet. Wind of tranquillity was flowing. I felt refreshed. My wife was also with me. She was also very happy. Will go again only if I can manage time, money and will.
