  • In 1928, a sculpture of Mother's Day was erected in the corner of Unioninkatu and then the Garden Gate. Sculptor Emil Cedercreutz (1879-1949) had offered a sculpture to Helsinki in 1927 and bought the city government by FIM 95,000. The actual sculpture differs from the proposed sketch. Originally, the mare stood in the upright but in the actual version it turns its turban to the stalk. The sculpture is bronze. The horses were the favorite of Cedercreutz, and he wanted to present them realistically and admiringly as in Mother's Day. General Mannerheim is said to have told Cedercreutz's sculptor quality that "Anyone can carve me, but only Emil Cedercreutz is able to carve a horse allen."
