Sibelius Monument, Helsinki

3.8
#2 of 273 in Parks in Finland
Stroll by the sea at Sibelius Monument, which commemorates Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Designed by Eila Hiltunen and completed in 1967, the structure features over 600 steel pipes fused together with a bust of the composer to represent the music of Sibelius. Photograph this 24-ton work of abstract art, which is also one of Helsinki's most popular tourist attractions. Some say they can hear music playing here with the sound of wind moving through the hollow pipes. • We went extra cross through the town to visit the monument. If you saw it in the photos, that sufficient actually. Live it's not just devastatingly ;) We did not visit the entire Park.

  • Listen Sibelius make the experience more big. Also nice cafe at red tiny traditional fishermans house.  more »
  • To accompany Partners Island's road, so can become a central point to stand down to walk, the park itself is not so, just take pictures can leave, but along the sea side all the way to the companion partners Island, the scenery is still beautiful, suitable for more than the rest of the time.

  • A monument that beautifully captures the ethos of Finnish design and it's unique creativity. The "pipes" are a sight to behold from far, and even better up close. Walk up to them, touch, look though them up to the sky, notice the intricate patterns on the sides. There is greenery all around, and at least in the summer ducks and sundry birds all around, making the monument seamless with nature.
  • The monument itself was breathtaking and fun to walk around and underneath. It’s a popular place among tourists. The monument is situated in a nice park where there are also toilets and food stands, so you can easily spend an hour.
  • Amazing sculpture, very famous many people from Asia come to visit the sculpture. It was great to see them cos I'm in the process of learning Chinese and they could tell me some info about the statue, but I heard them say that music plays in the metal tubes which was only a myth.
  • What's good The morning walk we did to reach the monument was the best part of our visit. What's not good The monument is simple and only worth taking few clicks. What to do Go early morning to beat the crowd. Enjoy the weather and simplicity of park.
  • Gem in the middle of a green garden in the heart of Helsinki. I watched some pipes were designated not to be fully-rounded and the monument seems to be "too real", in many ways. I'm myself not very fond of abstract arts, but this place may need more exposure to the world, as its historical value. Not a perfect spot to take pictures, but have a walk around would be nice. Tip: there is an ice cream kiosk not far from the monument. You can find it by walking in around 3-4 minutes. Don't be afraid to explore the garden itself, you can find some interesting spots, although not much.
