Pielpajarvi Wilderness Church, Inari

4.8
Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Sitting by a lakeshore surrounded by a birch forest, Pielpajarvi Wilderness Church represents one of the oldest buildings in northern Lapland. Built in 1760 on the site of an old Sami winter village, the wooden church remains in a surprisingly good condition given the fact that it sits largely abandoned, except for a yearly midsummer ceremony. Its doors remain unlocked all year round, welcoming all travelers. Amenities include functional restrooms and huts where you can warm up by the fire and make a cup of tea. The church can be accessed by hiking from the bay or from Inari village. • This old church from 18th century is worth visiting if you don't mind walking 5 km per one direction. But once you get there it's magic. It is easy to find but make sure to have comfortable shoes...  more »

  • A truly lovely place. Easy to find. Too busy for my taste. We met about 20 people on the walk. Three with barking dogs. Walk (9.8km return) is a little tough for some. Roots and rocks are a feature of the trail. The summer trail is well worn and over marked to the point where all the posts and blazes and blobs of paint on the trees spoil it. When you get there, turn your back on the bbq shelters and service huts and dog manure at the lakes edge and enjoy the charm. Once inside, this place will stir your soul and cause you to consider becoming religious. Enjoy.
  • Lovely landscapes and nature on the route and an unique church. Paths are semi-demanding with a lots of rocks and tree roots. If you are doing one to two days hike near Inari and choosing between this and the dull and quite boring Lemmenjoki national park's routes choose this.
