Lappeenranta Fortress, Lappeenranta

#1 of 10 in Museums in South Karelia
Must see · Specialty Museum · Museum
Rising over the shores of Lake Saimaa, Lappeenranta Fortress was erected to defend the town and guard the eastern border of Finland. However, after less than 20 years the fortification failed, when Russian troops took hold of the area and turned it into their own enclave. Today you can still see their Orthodox church at the site, as well as former barracks and prisons. Most of the buildings are now home to museums and galleries, and some house art workshops and cafes. A walk around the old town reveals structures that date back to the 1770s, including colorful wooden and stone houses typical of the region. • Been there many times, the area starts to be quite nice (renovations of the old structures, nature and plants,...) place to visit at a nice summer day but still lack's some more services for visitors  more »
  • Three museums (two art museums and a small and comfy cavalry museum), nice cafes, lots of shops with local arts and crafts. We had pancakes with honey that’s made by bees local to the fortress yard!  more »
  • Nice view over the city. The fortress is nothing special. The old houses around the fortress are idyllic and beautiful. There are few beautiful cafes on the top.
  • Very nice place to visit with cafes and museums around
