  • First of all, it is not worth discouraging the difficulties described in previous reviews with finding this place. Today it is well labeled. On the main route to the north of Finland, we bounce right on a well-visible plaque with the name of a French scholar. After about a kilometre we leave the car and the rest of the route we walk. The trail is well marked with white and blue pillars, the path is easy and the view of the river and the valley on the way beautiful. The quiet passage of this episode is 10-15 minutes. Especially when the weather is nice, it is absolutely worth. At the same time, unfortunately you can not count on the views, the slopes grew forest. The obelisk itself and the plaque placed next to the board commemorate the expedition of French scholar Pierra Maupertuis, an extraordinary character: the son of a Corsair from Saint Malo, a musketeer officer, a friend of Voltaire, and a enthusiast of Newton's theory at a time when they were laubled. His measurements, carried out during the expedition to Lapland, confirmed that the earth was lengthened by the action of centrifugal force. These were the first scientific studies that proved the validity of the theory of gravity and graying, which the academics considered to be superstition and temporary fashion.
