Ranua Zoo, Ranua

4.3
#2 of 11 in Zoos & Aquariums in Finland
Visit Ranua Zoo to see Finland's only polar bears in captivity near the Arctic Circle. The zoo is small because few species can live comfortably in the harsh environment. About 200 arctic animals call the zoo home, including lynx and wolves, and watching them play in the snow is a unique experience. The attraction is open year-round, even when the sun only appears for a couple of hours each day, and in the winter you can take a night safari through the habitats. Book a Ranua Wildlife Safari tour with a local guide to walk you through the habitats and to give you a chance to witness the animals feeding. Water-resistant winter clothing, lunch, a snowmobile ride, and transport to and from your hotel are all included in the safari package. • Great representation of the fauna of the Arctic Circle. I say it is more reserve than zoo because the animals are in suitable and wide areas (mostly). It's a good option to have a great day. As a curiosity there are barbecue areas where you only have to take the food and make it to your liking. On the way out in front of the souvenir shop where they also sell the tickets there is a spectacular chocolate shop at very cheap prices, compared to other establishments. To eat there is a buffet with local food that is quite acceptable. If I come back, I'll be ready to barbecue inside the compound.

  • The zoo is well managed. Animals have been kept in wild as much as possible. Feeding of bears and wolves are worth watching. Parking is free and tickets are reasonable. Very nice spot for kids. A bit in a remote location though, a wonderful place to be.
  • This zoo was an absolute gem. The enclosures were quite large, yet they were designed to be accessable with great viewing opportunities. The animals all appeared contented and well cared for. Truly a well done job with the zoo.
