Built on an island connecting two lakes, Olavinlinna Castle stands as the northernmost stone fortress from the Middle Ages still intact. Founded in 1475 by Knight Erik Axelsson Tott on behalf of the Swedish Crown, it was constructed to protect the Savo region from Russian forces. Explore the stone castle, take in scenic views of the lakes, and visit the castle museum and Orthodox museum to learn more about the history of the structure and region. View artifacts collected from the fortress, religious icons, and items from Finland and Russia. The Savonlinna Opera Festival has been held here since 1912.
