This new, experiential art museum is based on the unique collection of Moomin art by Tove Jansson donated to the Tampere Art Museum in 1986. The collection has been on display at Tampere Art Museum’s Moominvalley from 1987 to 2016. The superb new venue enables the museum to present a wider selection of works in an exciting, experiential space that has been renamed as the Moomin Museum.
The Moomin Museum offers all the wisdom, humour, fun, adventure and warm celebration of friendship that has won fans for Jansson’s books and illustrations all over the world.
The Moomin Museum is the only museum of its kind in the world. Run by the Tampere Art Museum, its collection comprises nearly 2,000 original drawings and paintings by the writer and artist Tove Jansson (1914–2001), over half of which are illustrations for her Moomin books. The collection also includes over 40 three-dimensional Moomin tableaux created by the artist Tuulikki Pietilä (1917–2009). The museum showcases roughly 300 drawings and 30 of Pietilä’s magical tableaux. The exhibits recounts the stories of all twelve of Tove Jansson’s Moomin books.
The new venue at Tampere Hall is spacious and contemporary, providing an experiential space for showcasing Jansson’s Moomin drawings and stories. Museum visitors are invited to also enjoy the newly renovated restaurant and café and the cloakroom services in the inviting entrance hall. There you will also find a new Museum Shop selling an exciting selection of Moomin products, music and design. Also don’t miss the Moomin Museum’s Reading Room, where you can browse Moomin books in over 20 languages. Moomin-themed packages including meals and accommodation can be booked for groups.
Welcome to Moomin Museum in 2017!

Beautiful, modern exhibition for children and adults. Part of the exhibition is a room where you can create your own animations. The exhibition is wheelchair accessible. Taking pictures is forbidden.
You’ll experience the history and of Moomin in such a beautiful place with an amazing layout. The staff is very helpful. I’d definitely recommend-even if you don’t have kids with you.
