Helsinki

— 9 nights

Daughter of the Baltic

Finland's largest and most populated metropolis, the maritime town of Helsinki boasts varied architecture, a lively cafe culture, and plethora of picturesque natural delights.
Let the collections at Kansallisgalleria and Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma capture your imagination. Step off the beaten path and head to Academic Bookstore (Akateeminen Kirjakauppa) and Hakaniemi Market. Get out of town with these interesting Helsinki side-trips: Heureka (in Vantaa), Tuusulanjarvi (Lake Tuusula) (in Tuusula) and Arctic Expedition (in Espoo). There's much more to do: brush up on your military savvy at Sea Fortress Suomenlinna, admire the striking features of Temppeliaukio Church, tour the pleasant surroundings at Hietaranta Beach, and browse the different shops at Sello.

For where to stay, photos, reviews, and more tourist information, refer to the Helsinki driving holiday website.

In March, daytime highs in Helsinki are 3°C, while nighttime lows are -5°C. You'll have a few hours on the 8th (Sun) to wrap things up before traveling home.

Land of a Thousand Lakes
Combining vast Nordic wilderness with bustling hip cities, Finland offers something to delight and surprise all its visitors. Generally speaking, the northern region is populated by unspoiled pine forests, glistening blue lakes, and a plethora of interesting wildlife, while the south is home to the nation's thoroughly modern urban centers. Although Finland holds the title of most sparsely populated county in the European Union, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs in cities like Helsinki, Espoo, and Tampere are often packed with fun-loving Finns. Do bring your dancing shoes, but don't forget your hiking boots either--you'll want to make use of the country's 37 national parks, spread throughout this "Land of a Thousand Lakes."
