Finland's largest and most populated metropolis, the maritime town of Helsinki boasts varied architecture, a lively cafe culture, and plethora of picturesque natural delights.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Sea Fortress Suomenlinna and Turku Castle. Explore hidden gems such as Katajanokka and Seurasaari Island and Open-Air Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Helsinki side-trips: Turku (Turku Cathedral & Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova) and Nuuksio National Park (in Espoo). There's still lots to do: admire the landmark architecture of Temppeliaukio Church, contemplate the long history of The Aalto House, explore the galleries of Mannerheim Museum, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Kamppi Chapel of Silence.

Zurich, Switzerland to Helsinki is an approximately 6.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of train, car, and ferry. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 1 hour traveling from Zurich to Helsinki. Expect a daytime high around 3°C in December, and nighttime lows around -3°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 30th (Mon) early enough to travel to Inari.

Inari is Finland's largest, most sparsely populated municipality, with four official languages, more than any other in the country. Kick off your visit on the 31st (Tue): pause for some serene contemplation at Saint Tryphon Pechenga Orthodox Church, examine the collection at Siida - Sami Museum and Nature Center, and then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Pielpajarvi Wilderness Church.

You can fly from Helsinki to Inari in 4.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of train and bus. Expect a bit cooler weather when traveling from Helsinki in December: highs in Inari hover around -7°C, while lows dip to -17°C. Discover out-of-the-way places like Levi Ski Resort and Icekarting Levi. Take a break from the city and head to Safaris and Kids' Land. Get out of town with these interesting Levi side-trips: Lapland Hotels SnowVillage (in Kittila) and Pallas-Yllastunturi National Park (in Muonio). It doesn't end there: look for all kinds of wild species at Santa"s Cottage & Pet Farm.
