An urban center set amongst the great Arctic wilderness, Rovaniemi serves as the capital of Lapland province.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Korouoma Canyon and German Soldier s Cemetery. Do some cultural sightseeing at Santa's House of Snowmobiles and Arktikum. Go for a jaunt from Rovaniemi to Ranua to see Ranua Zoo about 1 hour away. There's still lots to do: Head underground at Syvasenvaara Fell, see what you can catch with a fishing tour, admire the sheer force of Auttikongas, and identify plant and animal life at Napapiirin Porofarmi.

Get a sense of the local culture at Siida - Sami Museum and Nature Center and Saariselka S:t Paulus Chapel. Take a break from Saariselka with a short trip to Juutua Nature Trail in Inari, about 1 hour away.
