Outdoor pursuits--ranging from cross-country skiing and snowmobiling to reindeer safaris and chasing Northern Lights--draw the largest number of tourists to Saariselka.
Start off your visit on the 25th (Sat): fly down the slopes at Saariselka Ski & Sport Resort and then look for gifts at Hippupuoti Gift Shop. Keep things going the next day: trek along Urho Kekkonen National Park.

Traveling by flight from Helsinki to Saariselka takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and bus; or drive. When traveling from Helsinki in December, plan for a bit cooler days and much colder nights in Saariselka: temperatures range from -7°C by day to -17°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 26th (Sun) early enough to go by car to Levi.

Levi

Finland's largest and most popular ski resort, the fell of Levi provides excellent slopes and lively nightlife in an enchanting setting.
Step out of Levi with an excursion to Safartica Yllas in Yllasjarvi--about 48 minutes away. Spend the 27th (Mon) on two wheels at Levi Ski Resort. Next up on the itinerary: bet on your favorite at Icekarting Levi, stop by Elan Ski Shop & Rental, and make a trip to Giewont Husky Adventures.

You can drive from Saariselka to Levi in 3.5 hours. Another option is to take a bus. In December, plan for daily highs up to -6°C, and evening lows to -15°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 29th (Wed) so you can drive to Rovaniemi.

Rovaniemi

An urban center set amongst the great Arctic wilderness, Rovaniemi serves as the capital of Lapland province.

Do a combination of flight and train from Rovaniemi to Tampere in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. In January, Tampere is a bit warmer than Rovaniemi - with highs of -5°C and lows of -12°C. On the 2nd (Sun), you'll travel back home.
