Finland's largest and most populated metropolis, the maritime town of Helsinki boasts varied architecture, a lively cafe culture, and plethora of picturesque natural delights.
Visiting Teijo national park and Bellevue Beach will get you outdoors. Seurasaari Island and Open-Air Museum and Stromforsin ruukki are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get out of town with these interesting Helsinki side-trips: Raseborg (Fagervik Church, Raseborg Castle, & more), Arboretum Mustila (in Elimaki) and Tulliniemi Nature Path (in Hanko). Spend the 25th (Fri) exploring nature at Nuuksio National Park. Spend the 29th (Tue) exploring nature at Valkmusa National Park. There's lots more to do: learn about all things military at Fortress of Suomenlinna, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Helsinki Cathedral, admire the masterpieces at Kansallisgalleria, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Rock Church.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major airport is Helsinki Vantaa Airport. In January, daytime highs in Helsinki are 26°F, while nighttime lows are 17°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 29th (Tue) early enough to travel back home.
