Mariehamn is the capital of Åland, an autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty. Get out of town with these interesting Mariehamn side-trips: Eckero (Karingsunds Viltsafari & Aland Hunting & Fishing Museum) and Bomarsund (in Sund). There's much more to do: examine the collection at Kastelholm Castle, learn about all things military at Aland Maritime Museum, take in the waterfront at The Maritime Quarter, and walk around Lilla holmen.

There are many things that distinguish the autonomous Aland Islands from the rest of Finland, including the fact that they have their own parliament, issue their own stamps, and speak Swedish as the official language. The archipelago, situated in the Gulf of Bothnia, includes over 6,000 islands, of which about 80 are inhabited.
