Helsinki

— 29 nights

Daughter of the Baltic

Finland's largest and most populated metropolis, the maritime town of Helsinki boasts varied architecture, a lively cafe culture, and plethora of picturesque natural delights.
Visiting Nuuksio National Park and Tulliniemi Nature Path will get you outdoors. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Seurasaari Island and Open-Air Museum and The Aalto House. Change things up with these side-trips from Helsinki: Arboretum Mustila (in Elimaki), Porvoo (Cathedral of Porvoo, Porvoo Old Town, &more) and Pernio (Teijo National Park & Ruukin kehräämö ja puoti Oy). Spend the 5th (Wed) exploring nature at Ekenas Archipelago National Park. Pack the 19th (Wed) with family-friendly diversions at Linnanmaki Amusement Park. There's much more to do: admire the landmark architecture of Temppeliaukio Church, examine the collection at Mannerheim Museum, walk around The Esplanadi Park, and identify plant and animal life at Hagen - Ramsholmen - Hogholmen.

To find other places to visit, where to stay, traveler tips, and tourist information, read Helsinki online road trip planner.

If you are flying in from Germany, the closest major aiports are Helsinki Vantaa Airport, Turku Airport and Tampere-Pirkkala Airport. In September, plan for daily highs up to 19°C, and evening lows to 8°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 30th (Sun) early enough to travel to Inari.

Inari is Finland's largest, most sparsely populated municipality, with four official languages, more than any other in the country. On the 1st (Mon), take in the architecture and atmosphere at Pielpajarvi Wilderness Church, then experience rural life at Inari Reindeer Farm, and then wander the wide-open spaces of Reindeer Farm Petri Mattus. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: explore the striking landscape of Lemmenjoki National Park.
