Finland's largest and most populated metropolis, the maritime town of Helsinki boasts varied architecture, a lively cafe culture, and plethora of picturesque natural delights.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Sea Fortress Suomenlinna and Uspenskin Cathedral (Uspenskin Katedraali). Popular historic sites such as Temppeliaukio Church and Kamppi Chapel of Silence are in your itinerary. When in Helsinki, make a side trip to see Nuuksio National Park in Espoo, approximately Espoo away. Pack the 18th (Wed) with family-friendly diversions at Linnanmaki Amusement Park. Although predominately an industrial town, Imatra boasts a long and impressive history of tourism, largely owing to its fierce rapids, considered to have been Finland's first ever tourist attraction.
Attractions like Lempukka Beach and Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God make great kid-friendly stops. Escape the urban bustle at Siikalahti Wetland and Malonsaari. Venture out of the city with trips to The Parikkala Sculpture Park (in Parikkala) and Saimaa Canal (in Lappeenranta). There's still lots to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Joutsenon kirkko, admire the sheer force of Imatra Waterfall, step off the mainland to explore Lammassaari Island, and examine the collection at Imatra Veteran’s Home Museum.
