Although predominately an industrial town, Imatra boasts a long and impressive history of tourism, largely owing to its fierce rapids, considered to have been Finland's first ever tourist attraction.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Olavinlinna Castle and Savonlinna Cathedral. Take a break from the city and head to Linnansaari National Park and Atreenalin Seikkailupuistot. Step out of Imatra with an excursion to Savonlinna Provincial Museum in Savonlinna--about 1h 45 min away. There's much more to do: admire the sheer force of Imatra Waterfall, pause for some serene contemplation at Joutsenon kirkko, and head off the coast to Lammassaari Island.

You can do a combination of flight and train from Saariselka to Imatra in 7 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of bus and train. Traveling from Saariselka in May, things will get somewhat warmer in Imatra: highs are around 17°C and lows about 6°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Tue) to allow enough time to take a train to Lahti.
