Mariehamn

— 3 nights
Mariehamn is the capital of Åland, an autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty. Change things up with these side-trips from Mariehamn: Bomarsund (in Sund), Getabergen (in Geta) and Eckero (Eckerö Post & tullhus, Aland Hunting & Fishing Museum, &more). The adventure continues: see the interesting displays at Kastelholm Castle, make a trip to The Maritime Quarter, step off the mainland to explore Kobba Klintar, and learn about all things military at Aland Maritime Museum.

For other places to visit, ratings, traveler tips, and more tourist information, use the Mariehamn tour planner.

Helsinki to Mariehamn is an approximately 2.5-hour flight. You can also ride a ferry. When traveling from Helsinki in May, plan for little chillier days and about the same nights in Mariehamn: temperatures range from 15°C by day to 5°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 31st (Mon) to allow time to fly back home.

There are many things that distinguish the autonomous Aland Islands from the rest of Finland, including the fact that they have their own parliament, issue their own stamps, and speak Swedish as the official language. The archipelago, situated in the Gulf of Bothnia, includes over 6,000 islands, of which about 80 are inhabited. Many of the area's dining and accommodation options can be found on the picturesque main island, where 90 percent of the population resides. Natural beauty and an assortment of historical buildings make the islands an attractive holiday option. With a very flat landscape, cycling is one of the most popular, efficient, and enjoyable ways to get around. Regular ferries hop between the isles.
