Mariehamn

— 3 nights
Mariehamn is the capital of Åland, an autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty. Kids will enjoy Kastelholm Castle and Aland Maritime Museum. Change things up with a short trip to Bomarsund in Sund (about 32 minutes away). Next up on the itinerary: examine the collection at Museumship Pommern, step off the mainland to explore Kobba Klintar, indulge in some personalized pampering at Badhuset Mariebad, and explore the engaging exhibits at The Aland Island Art Museum.

For more things to do, photos, traveler tips, and other tourist information, you can read our Mariehamn trip itinerary planner.

Espoo to Mariehamn is an approximately 2.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of bus and ferry. While traveling from Espoo, expect slightly colder days and about the same nights in Mariehamn, ranging from highs of 15°C to lows of 5°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 16th (Sun) to allow time to fly back home.

There are many things that distinguish the autonomous Aland Islands from the rest of Finland, including the fact that they have their own parliament, issue their own stamps, and speak Swedish as the official language. The archipelago, situated in the Gulf of Bothnia, includes over 6,000 islands, of which about 80 are inhabited. Many of the area's dining and accommodation options can be found on the picturesque main island, where 90 percent of the population resides. Natural beauty and an assortment of historical buildings make the islands an attractive holiday option. With a very flat landscape, cycling is one of the most popular, efficient, and enjoyable ways to get around. Regular ferries hop between the isles.
