Although predominately an industrial town, Imatra boasts a long and impressive history of tourism, largely owing to its fierce rapids, considered to have been Finland's first ever tourist attraction.
Salpa Line Museum and Linden Esplanade are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step off the beaten path and head to Art Centre Salmela and St. George Church. Get out of town with these interesting Imatra side-trips: Rapio Mill (in Juva), St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (in Kotka) and Saint Peter and Saint Paul Cathedral (in Hamina). There's still lots to do: get engrossed in the history at Imatra Veteran’s Home Museum, stroll through Lammassaari Island, look for gifts at Imatran Kalatalo, and pause for some serene contemplation at Nuijamaa Church.

In September, plan for daily highs up to 17°C, and evening lows to 9°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Sat) to allow time to travel back home.
