Mariehamn

— 4 nights
Mariehamn is the capital of Åland, an autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty. Get out of town with these interesting Mariehamn side-trips: Bomarsund (in Sund), Eckero (Karingsunds Viltsafari, Aland Hunting & Fishing Museum, &more) and Getabergen (in Geta). There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Museumship Pommern, take an in-depth tour of The Cultural History Museum of Aland, step off the mainland to explore Kobba Klintar, and learn about all things military at Aland Maritime Museum.

To find ratings, photos, other places to visit, and more tourist information, refer to the Mariehamn trip planner.

Turku to Mariehamn is an approximately 2-hour flight. You can also ride a ferry; or do a combination of ferry and bus. In August, plan for daily highs up to 22°C, and evening lows to 13°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 26th (Thu) to allow time to fly back home.

There are many things that distinguish the autonomous Aland Islands from the rest of Finland, including the fact that they have their own parliament, issue their own stamps, and speak Swedish as the official language. The archipelago, situated in the Gulf of Bothnia, includes over 6,000 islands, of which about 80 are inhabited. Many of the area's dining and accommodation options can be found on the picturesque main island, where 90 percent of the population resides. Natural beauty and an assortment of historical buildings make the islands an attractive holiday option. With a very flat landscape, cycling is one of the most popular, efficient, and enjoyable ways to get around. Regular ferries hop between the isles.
