On the shores of the country's largest lake system, Lappeenrata serves as the economic and cultural center of southeast Finland.
Step out of the city life by going to Arboretum Mustila and Riverside Park. Venture out of the city with trips to Lammassaari Island (in Imatra) and Repovesi National Park (in Kouvola). Next up on the itinerary: take in the dramatic scenery at Imatra Waterfall, contemplate the waterfront views at Saimaa Canal, find something for the whole family at Angry Birds Activity Park, and see the interesting displays at Lappeenranta Fortress.

Helsinki to Lappeenranta is an approximately 2-hour train ride. You can also drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Helsinki in February, expect Lappeenranta to be little chillier, temps between -2°C and -7°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 15th (Fri) so you can go by car to Jyvaskyla.
